Habit

Picturesque large shrub to small tree, often multi-stemmed, in Central Europe 3-6 m, in subtropical climates quite possibly up to 20 m tall, 3-4 m wide, broad oval to round, spreading crown, branches sparse, very fast-growing, annual shoots of up to 2 m possible

Pseudo-fruits, orange-red, spherical, up to 3 cm large, October, rarely ripening here, edible, fruity-sweet taste, bird-feeding plant

Demands

Sunny to off-sun, humid, tolerates dry periods, adaptable, likes warmth, vineyard climate, frost protection advisable when young, sprouts willingly after frost damage, not wind resistant

Soil

Well-drained, moderately dry to moist, sandy, slightly acidic to alkaline, medium nutrient requirement

In China, the bark of Broussonetia papyrifera has been used for paper production for over 2,000 years
